Driving an older car in Coventry
Coventry is one of the few big English cities without a Clean Air Zone. Birmingham charges older petrol and diesel cars every day they enter the centre; Coventry chose road improvements and cleaner buses instead, and the government agreed in 2020 that no charging zone was needed. An old car costs nothing extra to run here, which is one reason so many of them stay on the road until they are worth more as scrap than as transport.
The A4053 ring road is the other local fact of life. Just over two miles round with nine junctions, finished in 1974, it is famous for slip roads that merge in the space of a few car lengths. Did you know? The fastest car on earth lives in Coventry
Thrust SSC, the jet-powered car that set the land speed record of 763 mph in the Nevada desert in October 1997, is parked in the Coventry Transport Museum in the city centre. It is still the only car to have gone through the sound barrier, and it sits a few yards from the Daimlers, Hillmans, Jaguars and Triumphs that made the city's name.

Have the V5C logbook ready if you have it, plus photo ID. If the logbook is lost, tell us when you book and we will explain what else will do. The driver completes the yellow section with you and the DVLA is told the car has gone to a recycler, so no more tax or fines land on you.
3The payment.
Paying cash for a scrap car has been illegal in England since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so anyone offering notes at the kerb is breaking the law. You are paid by bank transfer on the day of collection.
4The certificate.

No. Coventry chose road and bus improvements instead of a charging zone, and the government confirmed in 2020 that no charge was needed. Older cars are not penalised for entering the city, unlike Birmingham a few miles down the A45.
I live in student housing with no parking. Can you still collect?

Can I scrap a car with no MOT or tax?
