Car Recycling Explained
A scrapped car is not simply crushed. It is drained, stripped, shredded and separated into material streams, and UK law requires at least 95% of it by weight to be recovered. That makes cars among the most thoroughly recycled things anyone owns.

Draining comes first for a reason
A car carries several litres of hazardous liquid and a few genuinely explosive components. Fuel, engine and gearbox oil, brake fluid, coolant and air-conditioning refrigerant all have to come out and be stored properly before anything is cut or crushed, because shredding a vehicle with fluids still in it contaminates everything it touches.
Airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are pyrotechnic devices, deployed deliberately or removed intact. This is much of the reason only licensed sites may legally dismantle a vehicle.
The 95% rule
Under the End-of-Life Vehicles Directive, carried into UK law, at least 95% of a vehicle's weight must be recovered: a minimum of 85% recycled or reused as material, with up to 10% permitted as energy recovery. No more than 5% may reach landfill.
Meeting that is mostly a metals story. A typical car is around 65 to 70% steel by weight, all of it recoverable and all of it heading straight back into the supply chain. The stubborn remainder is the mixed plastics, foams, glass and textiles known in the trade as automotive shredder residue.

Steel is the reason any of this pays. Making it from scrap uses far less energy than making it from ore, produces far less carbon dioxide, and steel loses none of its properties in the process, so it can go round indefinitely without downgrading. That is why scrap steel holds a real market price, and ultimately why your car is worth money at all.
Electric and hybrid vehicles
The traction battery is the difference. High-voltage packs must be isolated and removed by trained staff before any other work begins, then reconditioned, repurposed for static energy storage, or sent to processors who recover lithium, cobalt and nickel.
Not every facility is equipped for that, so electric vehicles are often routed to sites with the right capability. The rest of the car follows a fairly conventional path, though EVs tend to carry more aluminium and copper than an equivalent petrol model.
Why this decides what you are paid
Your quote is the recoverable material value of the vehicle, which is precisely why weight drives the price and condition mostly does not. It also explains why pulling the catalytic converter, battery or wheels before collection lowers the offer, usually by more than those parts would ever earn you separately.
The Certificate of Destruction is your evidence that all of it was done properly. It comes from the Authorised Treatment Facility that dismantled the car, within seven days, and confirms the vehicle was processed under the correct environmental controls. If a buyer cannot produce one, the car is not being handled legally, and as last recorded keeper you may still carry the consequences.
Common questions
What happens to the fuel left in the tank?
It is drained during depollution and either filtered for reuse in site equipment or passed to a licensed waste oil handler. Leaving fuel in a vehicle through shredding would contaminate the whole material stream, which is why draining happens before any cutting or crushing begins.
Are airbags dangerous when a car is scrapped?
Undeployed airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are pyrotechnic devices and are treated as hazardous. Trained staff either remove them intact for controlled disposal or deploy them deliberately in a safe environment. This is one of several reasons only licensed facilities may legally dismantle vehicles.
Can parts from my car be resold to other drivers?
Yes, and often are. Components in serviceable condition, such as engines, gearboxes, doors, lights and body panels, are tested and sold as used parts. This is reuse rather than recycling, and it counts towards the recovery target the facility has to meet.
What is automotive shredder residue?
It is the mixed fraction left once metals have been separated out, typically plastics, foam, fabric, rubber and glass fragments. It is the hardest part of a vehicle to recycle economically and is where most remaining landfill and energy recovery volume comes from.
