Scrap My Car in Swansea

Long before Swansea sold cars for scrap, it smelted copper shipped in from the other side of the world, and the metal trade that grew out of that history never really left the city.

A city built on metal

Swansea was known through the nineteenth century as Copperopolis, the centre of the world's copper smelting trade, with ore shipped in from as far as Chile and Cuba to be processed in the Lower Swansea Valley. The valley's industry moved on long ago, but the city's relationship with metal recycling runs deeper than most, and it shows in how well served the area is for treatment facilities relative to its size.

Where we collect

Free collection from every SA postcode, covering the city centre, Sketty, Morriston, Mumbles, Gorseinon, Gowerton, St Thomas and Landore, and out along the coast towards the Gower and into Neath and Llanelli.

Paperwork and payment

The V5C and photographic ID matching the registered keeper's address cover it. No MOT, tax or insurance is required, and the car does not need to start or steer. You are paid by bank transfer, at or before collection, since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 made cash payment for scrap vehicles unlawful across England and Wales.

Your Certificate of Destruction follows from the treatment facility within seven days. The DVLA needs to be told once the car has gone; until then you remain the registered keeper and liable for it.

Questions we get asked in Swansea

Do you collect from the Gower or only the city itself?

Yes, coverage extends along the Gower peninsula as well as the city centre and surrounding suburbs. Rural roads and single-track lanes are routine work; mention the exact location at booking so the right recovery vehicle is sent.

Is there a clean air charge for driving an older car in Swansea?

No. Swansea has no Clean Air Zone, so there is no daily charge for driving or parking an older vehicle anywhere in the city, for cars or vans. Decisions about scrapping here usually come down to repair costs rather than a zone charge.
