Scrap My Car in Glasgow

Glasgow was the first city in Scotland to bring in a full Low Emission Zone, and that single fact changes the maths on scrapping an older car here more than almost anything else does.

Glasgow's Low Emission Zone

Glasgow operates Scotland's first city-wide Low Emission Zone, covering the city centre, and full enforcement began in June 2023 against non-compliant cars as well as buses, taxis and heavier vehicles. Petrol cars registered before 2006 and diesels before September 2015 are broadly the ones affected, though it depends on the engine rather than the year, so check your registration against the zone rules rather than assuming.

For a car used regularly in the city centre, the daily charge can outweigh the vehicle's remaining value within a matter of months. Where that is the case, scrapping converts the car into its metal value and stops the running costs at the same time.

Where we collect

Free collection from every G postcode, covering the city centre, Partick, Govan, Shawlands, Dennistoun, Maryhill, Pollokshields, Springburn and Bridgeton, and out through Paisley, East Kilbride, Clydebank and Bearsden.

Paperwork and payment

The essentials are the V5C logbook and photo ID matching the registered keeper's address. A valid MOT, tax or insurance is not required, and the car need not start or move. Payment is by bank transfer at or before collection, arranged the same way anywhere in the UK.

Cash payment for scrap metal has been banned in Scotland since September 2016 under the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015, separate legislation from the Act that covers England and Wales but with the same practical effect: a legitimate dealer cannot pay you cash. Within a week, the facility that dismantled the car issues your Certificate of Destruction. Tell the DVLA once the car has gone. You remain the registered keeper, and carry the liability, until you do.

Questions we get asked in Glasgow

My car does not meet the Low Emission Zone standard - what happens if I keep driving it?

You risk a penalty charge each time you enter the zone in a non-compliant vehicle, rising for repeat breaches. That is a separate matter from scrapping, but it is often what tips the decision, since the accumulated charges can exceed what the car is worth many times over.

Is the payment law in Scotland actually different from England?

Yes, in the specific legislation, though the practical outcome is the same. Scotland's cash ban runs under the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 rather than the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 that covers England and Wales. Either way, a legitimate buyer pays you by bank transfer, never cash.
